From the settlement of Iceland to the beginning of the 20th century Icelanders had to be thrifty and make a variform use of the fish skin. Usually when one buys fish now days the skin and the bones are the first to land in the garbage can, but Icelanders had to be resourceful, as they were poor and always on the brink of dying, if not from hunger and disaster, then because they lacked shoes and clothes.
